About Yuanlin (Tomb of Yuan Shikai)
The tomb of Yuan Shikai (1859–1916), the first president of the Republic of China, who tried to make himself emperor in 1915–16, built in 1916–1918 on the north bank of the Huan River. Its long axis copies the layout of Ming and Qing imperial tombs on a slightly lesser scale but mixes in Western elements: a large brick screen wall, stone bridges, a memorial archway of reinforced concrete, stone officials and animals in the dress of the time, a stele pavilion, the Jingren Hall and the tomb behind iron gates. It reopened in 2021 after its first major restoration in a century.
