About Zhangjiakou

Zhangjiakou, once known to Europeans as Kalgan, grew around a Ming fort at a Great Wall gate where caravans set out for Mongolia and Russia with tea; Dajingmen and Zhangjiakou Fort (Zhangjiakoubu) survive. Chongli, in the hills to the north-east, staged skiing and snowboarding events at the 2022 Winter Olympics, including at Genting Snow Park. Beyond the wall the Bashang grassland holds the earthen remains of Yuan Zhongdu, a Yuan-dynasty capital begun in 1307; to the south, Yuxian keeps its walled old town.
