Why go to Wenshu Monastery
Wenshu Monastery is a working Buddhist monastery in central Chengdu, a sequence of halls and leafy courtyards busy with worshippers lighting incense. Locals linger over bowls of tea in its garden teahouse, and its vegetarian restaurant serves simple Sichuan-style dishes. The streets around it are lined with shops selling incense, prayer beads and other Buddhist supplies.
The story
A temple has stood here for well over a thousand years, but it burned down at the end of the Ming dynasty. Legend says a mysterious glow seen around the monk Cidu, who revived it in the late 1600s, was taken as a sign of the bodhisattva Manjushri (Wenshu), and the monastery was renamed in his honour. Among its treasures is a relic said to be part of the skull of Xuanzang, the monk who travelled to India for Buddhist scriptures.
What to see at Wenshu Monastery
- Hall of Four Heavenly Kings 天王殿: The first hall holds a Maitreya statue facing the entrance, with the guardian Skanda behind him and the four heavenly kings along the sides.
- Mahavira Hall 大雄宝殿: The main hall, about 10.5 metres high, holds a seated Shakyamuni flanked by his disciples Ananda and Kashyapa, cast in 1829. A Buddha carved from Burmese jade is also enshrined here.
- Twin ancient firs 双杉: Two old China firs are among the few things that survived the fire that destroyed the monastery at the end of the Ming dynasty, and the monastery counts them among its treasures.
- Dharma Hall 法堂: Behind the main hall, a statue of Bhaisajyaguru, the healing Buddha, is attended by the Twelve Heavenly Generals.
- Scripture Tower 宸经楼: The upper floors hold relics: a finger-bone relic of the Buddha brought from Bodh Gaya in the 1920s, and a bone relic said to be Xuanzang's.
How to visit Wenshu Monastery
The halls run along a single north–south axis from the Four Heavenly Kings to the Scripture Tower, with leafy side courtyards where worshippers light incense. Walk the axis first, then finish in the teahouse, which suits the 2–3 hours most people spend. With only an hour, see the main hall, the twin firs and the Scripture Tower.
How to get to Wenshu Monastery

Where to stay

What to eat
- Monastery vegetarian meal 素斋: The monastery's restaurant serves vegetarian dishes in the Buddhist tradition, a gentle change from Chengdu's chilli-heavy cooking.
- Teahouse tea 盖碗茶: Chengdu locals sit over lidded bowls of tea in the monastery's garden teahouse, part of the city's teahouse habit.
