About Xuanmiao Temple
A Taoist temple in the heart of Suzhou's old city, founded in 276 and facing the busy Guanqian Street shopping street. Its main hall, the Hall of the Three Pure Ones, is a broad double-eaved timber hall rebuilt in 1179 under the Southern Song and still standing. Inside are a Song copy of a stone portrait of Laozi after the Tang painter Wu Daozi, with calligraphy by Yan Zhenqing, and around the hall a carved stone balustrade of the Five Dynasties.
