About Quanjin Guild Hall (China Kunqu Opera Museum)
A guild hall built by Shanxi merchants trading in Suzhou, first founded outside Changmen gate in 1765 and rebuilt on its present site off Pingjiang Road in 1879 after the original was burnt in 1860. Its central courtyard holds a richly carved and gilded two-storey opera stage under a domed ceiling, and the hall now houses the China Kunqu Opera Museum, with displays on the history, scripts, costumes and instruments of Kunqu, which UNESCO recognised as intangible heritage in 2001. Kunqu performances are staged here regularly, and the hall is a component of the Grand Canal World Heritage Site.
