About Prince Zhong's Mansion (Suzhou Museum)
The residence and offices that the Taiping commander Li Xiucheng, the Loyal Prince (Zhong Wang), built from 1860 out of existing mansions and gardens next to the Humble Administrator's Garden; it was still unfinished when Qing forces under Li Hongzhang retook Suzhou in 1863, and later served as the Jiangsu governor's office and a guild hall. Its three lines of halls keep a theatre with an old stage and many painted beams from the Taiping period. Since 1960 it has been the home of the Suzhou Museum, whose new galleries by I. M. Pei opened beside it in 2006.
