About Nanxun Ancient Town

A canal town that grew rich on the raw-silk trade from the Ming dynasty onward, where late-Qing silk magnates built houses and gardens mixing Chinese and Western styles. The scenic area takes in Little Lotus Villa, the Liu family garden and ancestral temple around a lotus pond; the Jiaye Library, built in 1920–24 for Liu Chenggan's collection of old books; the Zhang Shiming residence, with French tiles, coloured glass and a Western-style ballroom; the former home of the Nationalist elder Zhang Jingjiang; and the Baijian Lou riverside houses.
