About Taihu Lougang Waterways (Yigao)

The lougang are hundreds of small channels and larger waterways cut from the Spring and Autumn period onward through the southern shore of Taihu Lake, which with cross-dykes and polder fields drained the land and regulated the lake; the network is best preserved in Wuxing and was listed as a World Heritage Irrigation Structure in 2016. Visits centre on Yigao, an old village strung along its channel near the lake, with stone bridges, a Lougang culture exhibition hall, cafés and guesthouses.
