About St. Joseph's Seminary and Church

The seminary (Seminário de São José) was founded by the Jesuits in 1728, and the church (Igreja de São José) beside it, built in 1758, is one of the rare examples of Baroque architecture in China. The church has a Greek-cross plan under a dome 12.5 metres across and 19 metres high, lit by two rows of 16 small windows, and a side altar holds a bone relic of St Francis Xavier. The three-storey seminary building, with a Chinese-style sloping roof and an F-shaped plan, is not open to the public.

How to get to St. Joseph's Seminary and Church

Off St Augustine's Square, a short walk from Senado Square; the church is open to visitors but the seminary is not.
