About Shamian Island
Shamian is a small sandbank island on the Pearl River in Liwan District that Britain and France held as concessions from 1859 until the 1940s, cut off from the city by a canal dug in 1859. Its quiet tree-lined avenues are lined with banks, consulates, churches and houses in a range of European styles, now used as hotels, restaurants, shops and offices.
