About Qiongzhu Temple

A Buddhist temple on Yu'an Mountain north-west of Kunming, known as the first Chan (Zen) temple in Yunnan: tradition dates it to the Tang, and it rose to prominence when the monk Xiongbian taught here in the early Yuan dynasty. Most of the present buildings date from late Qing rebuilding. It is famous for its 500 painted clay arhats, each about a metre tall, made between 1883 and 1890 by the Sichuan sculptor Li Guangxiu and his students, which line the main hall and two side pavilions.
