About Wild Elephant Valley
A visitor area in the Mengyang section of the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve, about 36 km north of Jinghong, where wild Asian elephants sometimes come out of the rainforest to feed and drink. A 2.3 km elevated walkway and a cableway cross the forest canopy to observation points, but sightings are a matter of luck. Captive elephants appear at an elephant 'science park', where since 2023 tricks and rides have given way to displays of natural behaviour such as bathing and feeding; the site also has an elephant museum, a feeding area and a butterfly garden.
How to get to Wild Elephant Valley
About 36 km north of Jinghong at Mengyang, under an hour by road; Wild Elephant Valley station on the China–Laos railway is about 6 km away.
