About Thousand-Buddha Cliff (Guangyuan)

A cliff on the east bank of the Jialing River north of Guangyuan, honeycombed with Buddhist niches carved from the late Northern Wei to the Ming, most of them in the Tang. Some 848 niches with more than 7,000 figures survive along a face about 400 m long and over 40 m high, although more than half of the original carvings were destroyed when the Sichuan–Shaanxi highway was cut along its foot in 1935–1936. The main caves include the Great Buddha Cave and the Lotus Cave.
