Qinhuangdao 秦皇岛Qínhuángdǎo
Where the Great Wall meets the sea, and a beach resort since 1898

About Qinhuangdao
The name means Qin Emperor Island, from the legend that the First Emperor of Qin came to this coast seeking immortality. At Shanhai Pass, known as the First Pass Under Heaven, the Ming Great Wall meets the Bohai Sea, and at Laolongtou it runs out into the water. Beidaihe has been a seaside resort since 1898, when the Qing government opened it to all nations; it has the Beidaihe Historic Villas, pine-covered Lianfeng Mountain Park and a name among birdwatchers.
