About Zhaozhou Dharani Pillar

A seven-tier octagonal stone sutra pillar built in 1038 under the Northern Song, 16.44 m high, on the site of the former Kaiyuan Temple in the middle of Zhao County town. Its tiers are carved with the dharani sutra, Buddhist scenes, guardian figures and miniature buildings, and Chinese sources describe it as the tallest surviving pillar of its kind in China. Lightning damaged the middle tiers in 1983, it was repaired by 1990, and it now stands in a protective pool ringed by a stone balustrade.
