About Zhangjiakou Fort (Zhangjiakoubu)
The old Ming fort of Zhangjiakou, built in 1429 as a garrison post on the Great Wall defences, which grew into a major trading town on the caravan road to Mongolia and Russia. Its streets still hold several hundred Ming- and Qing-period courtyard houses, along with the Wenchang Pavilion, the Yuhuang Pavilion and an old academy, many of them restored in recent years. It is a lived-in old quarter rather than a closed attraction, and a protection regulation for it took effect in 2023.
