About Hemudu Site and Museum

The type site of the Hemudu culture, a Neolithic rice-growing culture of about 5000–3000 BC, found in 1973 on the north bank of the Yao River; its waterlogged layers preserved timber pile-houses joined with mortise and tenon, cultivated rice, black pottery and carved ivory. The site museum, raised on stilts like the excavated houses, shows the finds, and an outdoor area reconstructs the village. In February 2026 a larger archaeological site park with wetlands and hands-on displays of early farming and building opened for trial operation beside it.
