About Pujiu Temple

Pujiu Temple is the setting of the love story in The Story of the Western Wing, in which the scholar Zhang Sheng and Cui Yingying meet, and its brick pagoda is nicknamed the Yingying Pagoda after the heroine. The temple is recorded from the Sui dynasty at the latest, was destroyed by fire in 1920 and left only the Ming-dynasty pagoda and three cave shrines, and its main buildings were restored from 1986. The Yongji culture and tourism bureau counts the pagoda among China's four famous ancient echo structures, with a toad-like croak heard from around its base.
