About Xi'an City God Temple

Founded in 1387 and moved to this site off West Street in 1433, this Taoist temple is the seat of the chief city god, held to rule over the city gods of the north-western provinces. Its main hall, with a single-eaved hipped roof, was rebuilt in 1723 with timber from the demolished palace of the Ming princes of Qin, and an opera stage of 1887 stands in front of it. For decades the courtyards were filled by a wholesale market, which was moved out in 2003 when the temple was returned to the Taoist association.

How to get to Xi'an City God Temple

Off West Street about 900 m west of the Bell Tower, a short walk from Zhonglou metro station and next to the Muslim Quarter's western lanes.
