About Hongya Danjing

Hongya Danjing is a wooded gorge at the entrance to the Meiling hills, with a waterfall and cliffs carved with old inscriptions, the clearest dated 1185. A legend tells of Hongya, a music master of the Yellow Emperor, who dug five wells here to make elixirs and devised the twelve-tone scale, and the place is one of the Ten Views of Yuzhang, the old name for Nanchang. It has been a provincial heritage site since 1985, and Nanchang's old names Hongzhou and Hongdu are traced to it.
