About Tongguan Kiln Archaeological Site Park

The Changsha kilns, strung along the east bank of the Xiang River at Tongguan, made glazed stoneware from the Tang to the Five Dynasties and are seen as the birthplace of underglaze painted decoration, often with poems and proverbs, for markets as far away as Japan, Southeast Asia, West Asia and Africa. The national archaeological site park, opened in 2012, covers the kiln remains and potsherd heaps around Wazhaping, and its Changsha Tongguan Kiln Museum (opened 2018) shows more than 1,000 pieces beside a full-size replica of the Belitung or 'Black Stone', a 9th-century Arab ship wrecked with a cargo of Changsha ware. The Tongguan Kiln Guofeng Park theme resort lies just to the south.
