About Jinggang Ancient Town

An old river port on the west bank of the Xiang where the Wei River once flowed in, a rice market and salt depot busy enough to be called 'Little Hankou' until the river was diverted in 1957; it was here that Zeng Guofan, beaten by the Taiping in 1854, threw himself into the river and was pulled out by his men. Its streets of Ming, Qing and Republican-era houses, shops and guild halls, over 1,000 traditional buildings in all, were restored and opened as a scenic area in 2008, the year it was named a national historic and cultural town.
