About Former Shanxi Daxuetang (Shanxi University Hall)

The surviving 1904 building of Shanxi Daxuetang, the forerunner of Shanxi University, founded in 1902 with Boxer Indemnity funds at the suggestion of the British missionary Timothy Richard and, by the Taiyuan government's account, the third university in China after those of Beijing and Tianjin. The two-storey Western Learning College building has a Gothic-style castle façade and a square clock tower, combined with a Chinese-style parapet. It is now a school building.
