About Orchid Pavilion (Lanting)

The garden at the foot of Lanzhu hill where, in 353, the calligrapher Wang Xizhi and more than forty friends held a spring gathering, floating cups of wine down a winding stream and writing poems, for which he wrote the Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Poems, the most celebrated work of Chinese running script. The present site was rebuilt in 1548 and restored to its Ming and Qing layout from 1979, with the Goose Pond, the Lanting stele, the Liushang pavilion beside the winding stream, the Wang Xizhi memorial hall and a stele carved with inscriptions by both the Kangxi and Qianlong emperors. A calligraphy museum and stone copies of the Preface by later masters complete the visit.
