About Cao'e Temple

A temple on the west bank of the Cao'e River honouring Cao E, an Eastern Han girl who drowned in the river trying to save her father and became a model of filial piety; she was reburied here with a memorial stele in 151, and a shrine grew up around her grave. The present buildings, set out on three parallel axes with an opera stage, date from a rebuilding of 1931–36 after a fire in 1929 and are known for the dense carving of their columns, beams, brackets and doors. The temple also keeps a Song copy of the Cao E stele from 1093 and more than 30 couplets and plaques by noted calligraphers.
