About Rishengchang

The former headquarters of Rishengchang, regarded as China's first draft bank (piaohao), which grew out of a dye business and began issuing drafts cashable at branches in other cities in the early nineteenth century. The courtyards on West Street are now a museum, where displays include the coded marks once used to stop drafts being forged. Draft banks like this one made central Shanxi a financial centre of Qing China by the late nineteenth century.
