About Tat Tak Communal Hall

Tat Tak Communal Hall, completed in 1857, is the only purpose-built communal hall left in Hong Kong, built as the assembly and worship place of a joint village alliance and as the management office of Ping Shan Market. It was started by Tang Fan-yau, a member of the local gentry, and side halls were added in 1866; the building is plain and functional, of grey brick on a granite base. According to the Antiquities and Monuments Office, it was probably one of the meeting places where the armed resistance to the British takeover of the New Territories in 1899 was organised.
