About Guyi Garden
One of Shanghai's five classical gardens, begun in the Ming dynasty's Jiajing era and renamed Guyi Yuan after a new owner bought and enlarged it in 1746, with bamboo planted throughout. Its sights include the Yiye Hall, a lotus pond with a Song-dynasty pagoda, a Tang sutra pillar brought here in the 1950s, and a pavilion built in 1933 with one corner left missing to mark the loss of north-east China in 1931. The garden is also linked with the origins of Nanxiang xiaolongbao soup dumplings.
