About Zhenru Temple

A Buddhist temple in Putuo whose main hall, built in 1320, is regarded as the oldest timber building in Shanghai and its only mid-Yuan structure. Restored to its original single-eaved form in 1963–1964, when workers found part names brushed onto its timbers by the Yuan carpenters, the hall stands in a rebuilt temple that has been an active monastery again since 1991.
