About Former Mengzi Customs House and Southwest Associated University Memorial
Mengzi was opened as a treaty port after the Sino-French War, and its customs house, set up in 1889, was the first in Yunnan. Around South Lake survive the customs office, the French consulate of 1888, a French prison, the 'French Garden' and the French-style building of the Gelusi trading house, a firm set up by a Greek merchant in 1906. In 1938 the arts and law faculties of the wartime National Southwest Associated University taught here for several months, recalled by a memorial hall.
