About Mawei Shipyard Heritage Area (Foochow Arsenal)

The site of the Foochow Arsenal, the Qing navy yard and naval school founded at Mawei in 1866 with French engineers, which built steam transports and gunboats and trained many of the officers of the late-Qing Beiyang Fleet. Surviving workshops and the Chuanzheng Culture Museum tell its story, and one old machine shop now hosts an immersive staged show. A short walk away, the Mawei naval battle memorial hall, the Zhaozhong shrine and the martyrs' cemetery on Maxian Hill recall the Chinese sailors killed when a French squadron destroyed the Fujian fleet here on 23 August 1884.
