About Dongwo Hydropower Station

A small hydropower station on the Longxi River that Shui Xiheng, a Luzhou engineer who had studied in Germany, began building in 1921 to use a 44-metre natural drop in the Dongwo gorge; it was completed in 1925 as the Jihe power plant with a 140-kilowatt Siemens generator and is still generating today. In 2018 the Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society recognised it as the first hydropower station in China designed and built by Chinese engineers, and it is also listed as national industrial heritage. A statue of Shui stands at the entrance, two old turbine generators still run in the machine hall, and the gorge around it is laid out as Dongwo Park, popular with local families and school study groups.
