About Xu Shen Cultural Park and Tomb

A culture park of about 10 hectares built around the tomb of Xu Shen, the Eastern Han scholar who compiled the Shuowen Jiezi, regarded as the first comprehensive dictionary of Chinese characters. A Han-style hall named for Xu Shen's honorific 'sage of characters', an 80 m avenue of characters carved with famous calligraphy, a dictionary museum, an exhibition hall on the Shuowen Jiezi and a stele forest of more than a thousand stones line the axis leading to the tomb. The earth mound stands on a low rise with steles put up by local magistrates in 1656, 1707 and 1876.
