About Jiuquan Drum Tower

The landmark tower at the central crossroads of Jiuquan: its rammed-earth base was the east gate tower of the city rebuilt under the Former Liang in the 4th century, found itself at the centre of town when the walls were extended east in the Ming, and was faced with brick in 1725. The three-storey wooden tower on top dates from 1905, after a fire in 1865, and the four arched gateways carry inscriptions naming where each road leads: Mount Hua to the east, Yiwu (Hami) to the west, the Qilian Mountains to the south and the desert to the north.
