About Tianbao Palace

A Taoist temple complex north-west of Xuchang, founded in 1240 as an abbey, raised to a 'palace' in 1269, destroyed at the end of the Yuan and rebuilt from the Ming onwards. Along its central axis a triple-arched gate, an offering pavilion on stone columns and halls to Yue Fei, Guan Yu, the Jade Emperor and the Thunder Patriarch lead to the broad Zhenwu Hall, roofed in green glazed tiles and fronted by columns carved with dragons and phoenixes.
