About Shizhongshan (Stone Bell Mountain)
A small hill on the Yangtze where Poyang Lake flows into the river, named for the bell-like booming of waves in the caves under its cliffs, a sound the Song poet Su Shi investigated by boat and described in his essay on the mountain. The hill commands the river-lake junction and was fought over by Taiping and Xiang Army fleets in the 1850s; the buildings on it, completed by 1860 and centred on a shrine hall, include Buddhist halls and a guest villa, and the rock is carved with inscriptions by Su Shi, Huang Tingjian, Guo Moruo and others. The buildings and inscriptions are on the national list of protected sites, added in 2013.
