About Whampoa Military Academy Site

Sun Yat-sen founded the Army Officer Academy, known as the Whampoa Military Academy, here on Changzhou Island in 1924, in the buildings of a Qing army school, to train officers during the first Kuomintang–Communist alliance. The main school building, bombed in 1938 and rebuilt to its original form in 1996, holds exhibitions on the academy's history and recreated offices, classrooms and dormitories. The site also includes the house where Sun stayed on visits, the academy club hall of 1926 and a memorial to Sun on a nearby hill.
