About Zhao Royal City, Handan

The remains of Handan, capital of the state of Zhao from 386 to 228 BC, in the south-west of the modern city, of which the visitable part is the Zhao Royal City, the palace quarter. It consists of three joined walled enclosures (west, east and north) with stretches of rammed-earth wall and large palace platforms, the biggest being the Dragon Terrace in the western enclosure. Since 2022 it has been presented as a national archaeological site park, with a site museum whose design echoes the terrace and a neighbouring Zhao-culture park, while the much larger commoners' city lies mostly buried under modern Handan.
