About Yulin Caves

Buddhist cave temples cut into both cliffs of the Yulin River gorge south of Guazhou, regarded as a sister site of the Mogao Caves and managed by the Dunhuang Academy. About 43 caves hold some 270 painted statues and more than 5,200 m² of wall paintings from the Tang to the Yuan, with secular scenes such as farming, wine-making, a smelting furnace and a wedding among the Buddhist subjects. The Eastern Thousand Buddha Caves, about 45 km to the east, belong to the same protected unit and have eight decorated caves of the Western Xia and Yuan.

How to get to Yulin Caves

About 70 km south of Guazhou county town, roughly an hour by road.
