About Ganden Monastery
The first of the three great Gelug monasteries, founded in 1409 by Tsongkhapa himself on the top of Wangbur Mountain above the Lhasa River valley in Dagzê District. It was largely destroyed after 1959 and has been extensively rebuilt since the 1980s; the main sights are the Serdung with the rebuilt tomb of Tsongkhapa, the Tsokchen assembly hall and the chapel where he taught. A kora path around the hilltop gives wide views over the valleys.
