About Ruiyan Mountain and Maitreya Statue

A hill at Haikou town east of Fuqing whose eastern foot holds a laughing, pot-bellied Maitreya Buddha about 9 m tall, carved into the rock between 1341 and 1368 and described as the largest Yuan-dynasty Maitreya in China. The pavilion that once sheltered it is long gone, leaving ten stone pillars and three steles, and a temple with a main hall and bell and drum towers stands on a hillside carved with some 170 inscriptions, among them some by the Ming general Qi Jiguang.
