About Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden

Chi Lin Nunnery is a large Buddhist temple complex founded in 1934 as a retreat for nuns and rebuilt in the 1990s in the style of the Tang dynasty, with timber halls held together by interlocking joints rather than nails. Its halls hold statues of the Buddha and bodhisattvas, and visitors are asked to keep quiet and not to take photographs inside. A footbridge links it to Nan Lian Garden, a Tang-style landscaped garden opened in 2006 with a lake, hills, rocks, wooden pavilions and a red bridge.
