About Huishan Temple

A Buddhist temple below Jicui Peak that began as a Northern Wei detached palace, became a temple in the 6th century and took its present name under the Sui; it counts as one of the four great monasteries of Mount Song. Its main hall is a Yuan-dynasty timber building with large bracket sets, and the compound keeps steles from the Eastern Wei to the Tang. Just to the west stands the brick pagoda of the Tang monk Jingzang, built after his death in 746 and described as the only surviving Tang octagonal brick pagoda imitating timber construction, with several Qing brick pagodas nearby.
