About Songyang Academy

One of the four great academies of the Northern Song, founded as a Buddhist temple in 484, later a Taoist temple and from 1035 a Confucian academy where the philosophers Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi taught. Its Qing-period courtyards hold a hall to Confucius, a lecture hall, a shrine to the sage-kings Yao and Yu and the Duke of Zhou, and a library, and two ancient cypresses that legend says Han Emperor Wu ennobled as generals. By the gate stands the Tang stele of 744, about 9 m tall and the largest ancient stele in Henan; the academy is part of the Historic Monuments of Dengfeng World Heritage site.
