About Geleshan Martyrs' Cemetery (Baigongguan and Zhazidong)

A memorial park at the foot of Gele Mountain on ground that in the 1940s held a base of the Nationalist intelligence service (Juntong), where the wartime Sino-American Special Technical Cooperative Organization (SACO) was also set up, and its two prisons for political detainees: Baigongguan, a former villa, and Zhazidong, a former coal pit. Days before the People's Liberation Army took Chongqing at the end of November 1949, most of the prisoners, many of them underground Communist Party members, were executed, an event known in China as the '27 November massacre'. The site has the restored prisons, an exhibition hall, a cemetery and monuments; the Chinese official name of the heritage unit is the 'SACO concentration camp site'.

How to get to Geleshan Martyrs' Cemetery (Baigongguan and Zhazidong)

At Lieshimu in Shapingba District, about 15 km west of Jiefangbei and about 600 m from Lieshimu station on Metro Line 1; Baigongguan is about 1 km and Zhazidong about 2 km uphill from the main memorial.
