About Putuo Zongcheng Temple
A vast Qing imperial temple built in 1767–71 on a mountain slope and modelled on the Potala Palace in Lhasa, which earned it the nickname Little Potala; it is the largest of the Eight Outer Temples. Its core is the Great Red Terrace, a red block about 25 m high, with the Wanfa Guiyi Hall, roofed in gilded copper tiles, at its centre. The stele pavilion near the entrance carries inscriptions recording the return of the Torghut Mongols and their submission to the Qing.
