About Puning Temple

A Qing imperial temple built in 1755–59 after the Qing campaign against the Dzungar Mongols, nicknamed the Big Buddha Temple. Its front half follows a Chinese seven-hall plan, while the rear half is a Tibetan-style mandala modelled on Samye Monastery in Tibet, centred on the Mahayana Hall, which holds a gilded wooden Guanyin with a thousand arms and eyes that stands more than 20 m high. It is still a working Buddhist temple, and the adjoining Puyou Temple, built in 1760 as a monastic college and now displaying carved wooden arhat statues, is reached through a door inside it.
