About Beijing Dongyue Temple

A Taoist temple of the Zhengyi school founded in 1319 outside the old Chaoyang Gate and dedicated to the god of Mount Tai, the Great Deity of the Eastern Peak, then rebuilt and enlarged under the Ming and Qing. Around its main courtyard, rows of small rooms hold plaster figures of the 'seventy-six departments' of the Taoist pantheon, and many old steles survive. It also houses the Beijing Folk Customs Museum, which holds a large temple fair at Spring Festival.
