About Former Site of Hunan First Normal School

Mao Zedong studied at this teacher-training school from 1913 to 1918 and then worked here, and the old campus is now the Mao Zedong and First Normal School Memorial Museum, with his classroom, dormitory, study room and the school hall laid out as they were. The school traces its roots to Chengnan Academy, founded in 1161, and its 1912 buildings, mainly Western in style with courtyards and pavilion roofs and modelled on Tokyo's Aoyama Normal School, were rebuilt to the original design in 1966–68 after the 1938 fire.
