About The Cenotaph
Unveiled in 1923, the Cenotaph is the earliest memorial formally built in Hong Kong to the dead of the First World War, and an almost exact replica of the one on Whitehall in London. The years of the Second World War were added to its inscription later, and eight Chinese characters carved in the 1980s extend the dedication to all who died in the wars, especially in the defence of Hong Kong. Commemorative events are held here every year.
